first day at Rusty George.

today i was shown around the office, introduced to a bunch of people that i'll never remember the names of haha - and sent strait off to work.
first i cut out labels for rusty's signature water "rust in a bottle, just add metal" - then tore off the labels of generic bottled water and replaced them with the new ones, big fun.

then chloe and i were sent off to design new signs around the office, like a creative "no solicitors" sign, and a better sign for how to work the alarm system, we will be working on that tomorrow as well.

and then we made new binder labels for De that were "more orange" and to her liking.

pretty exciting i'll tell you.

rusty george day 2

today i worked more on signage for around the office. when done i rang a triangle and we had a critique. that was probably the most intense moment of the day. they certainly had a lot to say.... so i guess i just enforced my understanding for what it means to suck it up haha.

today was just another day of various design jobs for around the office and a very insightful viewing of the documentary "helvetica" (as in the font).
and it was probably the best documentary i've ever seen. i loved the history, and it really opened my eyes - even more - to the world of design.
i was also assigned to work on a "real" project - which is to design a logo for a new condo complex. and while whatever i come up with will not be used on the actual client because i'm not being paid, i feel it will be a good learning experience. at least chloe and i are going to present our ideas to the client on monday...
and lastley, i did a lot of bonding with the staff, or rather, i've been bonding with the staff for several days now.
i quite like them, they're witty and have lovely taste in everything. it's nice being able to talk about really random foreign films like Delicatessen to someone.

today i mainly worked on logos for a new condo complex.... i feel pretty good about what i've come up with so far. i also feel i have a lot to learn from the people around me... which is nice, never stop learning i suppose... annnnnd yeah.

more logo work today and lots of good laughs. i worked a bit with illustrator which is completely new to me - and learned a really cool new trick for indesign. all and all i view this as valuable information, especially for designing the yearbook. (by the way, my senior project is making the entire SOTA 07-08 yearbook... haha)

oh, and most importantly, i do believe i remember everyone's names now!

today chloe and i were sent to do our first big bit of filing/organizing, which consisted of shelfs full past projects as reference materials. the problem being that there was no organization to them whatsoever. so off we went sorting and labeling... i suppose we will be returning to this project latter when new shelving units are assembled.

we also worked more on the logo project, which we were supposed to have a meeting over around 2:00 or so, but it was moved to 5:00, which was then luckily moved to tomorrow. i don't mind staying late, but right now i'm really busy in my personal life and every minute is valuable.

I realized today that while i've been doing plenty of design projects on my own for the past few days, i've failed to really watch the other designers around the office work. and that is kind of stupid. being given the chance to experience the world of design for several weeks and not embracing everything i can get out of the pros. so i've decided to talk with the people father away from my corner with chloe. i want to know more about the manufacturing process....so yeah

aside from that...today we finished up the logo project i believe, made a bunch of name tags for a meeting, modge podged de's wall of shame a bit more, participated in a couple group critiques and absorbed the atmosphere.

today we had a creative review on our new office signs... still not quite right i guess. i'm defiantly learning about appropriate placement/styles. for example, when making a sign for the front door in the a hall shared with another business, one should consider who will be viewing it, and that it might very well be someone's first impression of the business. therefore it should be tame and subtle. on the other hand, when making a sign for inside of the business in a area mainly seen by the staff - you have more creative freedom to do something more obscure and "interesting" because you're making the office more fun rather than showing off to client.

today we chatted with de a bit and told her that we would like to see more client meetings/interactions while we're still around. - and this lead to our first logo pitch, 27th street station at that, which i felt was very interesting. jason showed them four ideas, and they appeared rather torn because they were really good one. chloe and i also appeared to be a good asset for the client because they're trying to market to people close to our age, so we were asked with we liked the best, and that was our two cents of the day.

it was also rusty's birthday! so we had a little party at the end of the day with a really good cheesecake.

today we finished moving around our organization project with new shelves....
annnnnnnnnd... sat in on a concepting meeting for point defiance's new children's exhibit "animal avenue." it was nice seeing/hearing about what the designers are given to base their work off of.

today jason gave us the opportunity to work on concepts for two upcoming "official weird holiday" promotions. and this is defiantly one of the more interesting assignments we've been given to work on. i want to figure out how to work my art style into it.... but unfortunately we only have two days left and my schedule is full after 5. so that's a little frustrating, i wish we known about it sooner and at least have a weekend to work on it.

and then chloe received a request from monika to create signs for the internship breakfast on friday.... so we did that. i decided that i really love art nouveau and 70's poster art, so chloe and i worked together based on that hippie trippy idea.... but of course you guys didn't like it, and all i have to say to that is, lame.

today was fun designing posters for my yearbook project. i like using their computers and getting to now illustrator better, so it's too bad that we're leaving tomorrow. i feel that my time here has been well spent, and even when doing nothing, i'm doing something learning about the field through really interesting and talented people.
so yeah, posters.... and preparing postcards to be sent out.
